Tapton Grammar School is a small P-9 independent school with a distinctive ethos and exceptionally high levels of parent engagement, having originally been founded by parents themselves. The Principal and some governors sense that a significant number of parents see themselves as still being in charge. This causes difficulties as the Principal and governors seek to ensure the school meets its legal and regulatory duties. I have just completed a 6-month task focusing on the development of school policies and structures aimed at clarifying and formalising the relationship between parents and the school. The assignment required contextual sensitivity and considerable consultation with the various stakeholders.
